The Engine That Drives Every Story

Session Description:
Robert will introduce attendees to the formula that drives every successful story and show them how to recognize it and use it for maximum effectiveness.
Bio:
A 4th generation Korean-American, Robert grew up in Honolulu and is an honors graduate from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. In his forty-year career in Hawaii's broadcast industry, Robert has written approximately 25 television documentaries, and has held leadership positions at KGMB, KHON, and PBS Hawaii, where he is currently V.P. of Learning Initiatives. Robert has been the executive producer of the station's HIKI NO student digital storytelling network since its inception in 2011.

#NewsLife: Navigating Local Media

In this session, explore the world of working in local TV news. Learn behind the scenes tips and tricks to enhance storytelling while executing on-air and print reporting.
Bio:
Dillon Ancheta has worked for Hawaii News Now for six years telling local stories that matter to local people. In 2022, he took on the title of HNN Digital Reporter and continues to explore the endless possibilities of storytelling. Born and raised on Kauai, Dillon has established a career in Hawai’i media building a loyal audience on social media, digital platforms and traditional TV mediums.

Acting Out Your Story

Session Description:
You've written a great story, now what? Your narrator has to become an actor, trying to bring all the nuances in the script to life. We'll look at some of techniques that professional film actors use in their performances and see how they can be used in a short documentary.
Bio:
Dave Rosen turned success at making short films into becoming one of Hawaii’s leading commercial directors. He combines great storytelling and getting great performances from his actors with a wealth production expertise and technical knowledge. He is passionate about helping everyone to bring their “A” game to the shoot, making sure that every production turns out the best it can be.

How to Make a Career in Editing

Session Description:
Learn what it's like to be a professional film and video editor in this practical, hands-on workshop with Shirley Thompson, freelance documentary editor. Film editing is a competitive business where creative people need to know the craft of filmmaking, master editing technology, know how to get jobs and get paid, and know how to take care of themselves personally and financially so they can have a long, successful career. How does someone break into the film editing business? What skills do you need to be a successful editor? What kind of editing jobs are out there and how much do they pay? A 40-year veteran of the independent film and television industry, freelance editor Shirley Thompson offers insights on how to get started working in the film and video industry as an editor and how to build a sustainable career. This workshop offers participants the opportunity to ask questions and engage in an honest talk-story about the challenges and rewards of working as a film and video editor.
Bio:
Shirley Thompson is a veteran documentary film editor best known for the films she has edited including The Last Rodeo (2022), Finding Kukan (2016) and Pidgin: The Voice of Hawai‘i (2008). These films have shown at film festivals worldwide and broadcast nationally on PBS. Her editing has been recognized with an Emmy and a Peabody award. She has mentored teachers and students for Hiki Nō on PBS Hawai‘i since 2016.

Shooting and Editing an Action Sequence
with Ryan Kawamoto, Television and Film Director, Mentor for PBS Hawaii's HIKI NŌ
Session Description:
In Part 1: Students will learn the theory behind shooting an action sequence through the use of camera angles, focal lengths, and cutaways. The student teams will then do their own hands-on exercise and shoot their own action sequence and return to the classroom for analysis.
In Part 2: Students will take the footage they shot in Part 1 and see how their footage can be edited together and the many ways the same shots can be used in a different arrangement to achieve different storytelling results. The session will reinforce best practices on shooting for the edit.
Bio:
Ryan Kawamoto is an award-winning television and film director represented by Kinetic Productions for over 20 years. His latest film, “Voices Behind Barbed Wire: Stories of Hawaiʻi,” presented by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi was awarded a 2020 Preservation Honor Award by the Historic Hawaiʻi Foundation and aired on PBS Hawaiʻi. He also directs television commercials most notably spots for Island Insurance featuring NFL Quarterback Marcus Mariota and digital media projects for Central Pacific Bank featuring world champion surfer Carissa Moore.

Finding Your Personal Story as a Filmmaker

In order to find the story you want to tell, you must first understand who you are as a storyteller. Kolby will speak candidly about her journey as a filmmaker -- the failures, the lessons and the path to discovering her identity as a person and how it translates to the work she creates. In this session, you will begin the process of self-knowledge and authentic filmmaking.
Bio:
Kolby Moser is a Film Director, Producer, Business Coach and Podcast Host. She began her career as a News Television Producer before starting ARIA Studios in 2008. Kolby also co-founded ARIA Childrens Fund - a non-profit that partners with organizations around the world to combat child trafficking. She was recognized at one of Pacific Business New’s 40 under 40 in 2021 and co-hosts the podcast “Uncut Hawaii,” interviewing Hawai’i’s top creators, entrepreneurs and change-makers.

Photographic Lighting: The Art of Finding and Creating Good Light

One of the premier photographers in the Pacific Rim, Ric is an island artist with a global perspective serving a diverse international clientele from his home base in Honolulu. 30 years, he has excelled in photography’s most demanding genres — fashion, food, people, resorts and aerial photography — bringing a fresh eye and a unique approach to each one.

Yasha Ronquillo is a Maui-based portrait photographer and videographer who specializes in weddings, couples, and individual-styled shoots. Working with residents and visitors, her work features the warm and rich sceneries of the island while highlighting the love and beauty of her clients. As a 2022 graduate from the University of Hawaiʻi West Oahu Academy of Creative Media, she works extensively with new media technologies and loves to mentor younger creatives who are interested in photography and video production. Outside of work, Yasha is the director of the Media Ministry at her local church and is a volunteer editor for the World Mission Outreach.

Olelo Basic Media Production Certification

Session Description:
Overview of Olelo and the equipment and facilities that are available for community members to use in creating their own stories. We will use Hands-on activities and exercises to demonstrate your video production skills that can earn you your certification. After the certification, you will be on your way to be able to check-out equipment at any of our 6 Media Center locations to use on your own productions.
Bio:
Originally from Maui and a graduate of King Kekaulike High School, Jennifer graduated from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa with a B.A. in Communications, Television Production and Multimedia. Jennifer came to Olelo as an intern through UHM and loved the work, the mission and the people. She was hired into the Training Department after graduating and have spent the last 19 years at Olelo in various departments including Playback/Master Control, Creative Services and various Media Center locations on the island. Jennifer became the Training Manager in 2022.

Born and raised on Kaua’i Zavier worked for the state as a custodian for 3 years and was always looking for a positive change. Social media (sketch comedy specifically) changed his life.

Producing and Creating a Documentary Film

Interviewing people, budget, directors vision, archiving, directors goal when completed, audience.
Bio:
Keoni Alvarez - a Hawaiian independent producer, director and writer from the islands of Hawai’i. I had the opportunity to travel the world for several years on Norwegian Cruise Line in the Broadcast department. This experience has introduced me to many different cultures, people and places. In 1990 I started my career as a graduate of Na Leo O Hawaii Public Access Station and the WGBH Producers Academy in Boston. Through my early adulthood I always enjoyed filming my Hawaiian culture through stories, language and dance. My goal is to inspire my students to express themselves and to take pride in their culture. KAPU: Sacred Hawaiian Burials is produced, written and directed by Keoni Kealoha Alvarez. My film projects have focused on strengthening, preserving, practicing and perpetuating Hawaiian burials.

What Makes a Great Story?

Session Description:
Exploring the fundamentals of Visual Storytelling by answering the question "What Makes a Great Story?". We will watch and critique stories applying The HIKI NŌ Story Criteria and discuss what elements go into creating good stories, and what can be done to turn them into great stories.
Bio:
Brent Keane grew up on the windward side of Oahu. His passion for media and design began in high school where he was introduced to various aspects of media production in the Communication Arts program at Kalaheo High School. From there he went on to earn a degree in Visual Communications from Collins College in Tempe, AZ. Upon Returning to Hawaii he worked in the print industry, eventually heading the digital pre-press department at a local commercial printer. After college, he started a company specializing in database driven websites as the Art Director, and synthesized his passion for photography, design, and technical skills by developing a boutique Photo Booth Service. More recently he moved into the world of video production and television at KALO TV helping to provide the people of Hawaiʻi an instructive, educational and inspirational experience through programming, outreach and community interaction. His responsibilities included everything from master control and video production to being general manager. All this has led to him being a part of the PBS Hawaii HIKI NŌ team as Co-Producer/Editor where he looks forward to inspiring and preparing the next generation to succeed in a field he has zealously pursued in his own career.

Choose Your Own Adventure! How to Find Your Story During the Pre-Interview
with Terri Inefuku & Christi Young, Communications Specialist (Terri) and External Communications Manager (Christi)
Session Description:
A good journalist never shoots first, asks questions later. There are so many ways to tell a great story — asking questions first allows you to find the perfect one before you even press the record button. In this workshop, we’ll use real-time role play to pre-interview a subject, discuss several potential storylines, and identify the best one to help you conduct a focused, streamlined interview. See how a simple conversation can save you hours of excessive work, and learn how to map the rest of your story to create the perfect adventure for your viewers.
Bio:
Terri and Christi first learned they worked well together while at KGMB and Hawaiʻi News Now. Christi then moved on to HONOLULU Magazine, and Terri followed a few years later. While Christi eventually took the helm as the magazine’s editorial director, Terri left to help shape KHON’s online presence as its digital executive director. Both have since traded their journalism hats for jobs in communications; Terri at the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association and Christi at Hawaiʻi Pacific Health. But as longtime mentors, they’re excited for the opportunity to collaborate on a new workshop for HIKI NŌ.


Classic 3-Point Lighting Demonstration

Session Description:
Forest will demonstrate the basic components of classic 3-point lighting (Backlight, Keylight, Fill-Light) and the wide of range of looks and feelings that can be created in this traditional lighting set-up.
Bio:
Forest Butler is a 15-year veteran of the PBS Hawaii production. He has been the lighting director for countless in-studio shows as well as director of photography on hundreds on on-location productions.
